How
Much To Tip The Musicians?
Mike asks: What's a proper tip for a jazz band that sings a song at your table. For example, the trio that strolls around and plays at Arnaud's Sunday brunch. Tom sez: It depends on a few things. If they're just near your table but are really playing to the whole room, you could get by without tipping--although a fiver is appropriate. If they park in front of your table and direct the music at you, it's certainly worth $5-$10. Particularly if you request a song (even "Happy Birthday") and they play it. Now I'll tell you what I do. If the musicians in a dining room are at all decent, and they play a good part of the time you're there, whether they stroll around or not, I usually give them between $10 and $20. If they let me sing with them, it's definitely $20, because I know my doing that will lower the tips from everybody else. I'd welcome input from other musicians than the ones I spoke to about this.
