Tom's Favorite
New Orleans Style Coffee
Shirley (and quite a few other people) ask (and have been asking for years): You mentioned on your radio show the name of the coffee you use and enjoy with lots of chicory and not a great deal of caffeine. I missed the name of it, and where to get it. Would you remind me? Tom sez: It's Union Coffee and Chicory, made by Merchants Coffee Company, an old outfit on the corner of Magazine at Julia. They also make French Market coffee, whose chicory blend is also excellent. I like Union just a little better, and I drink it brewed do dark that no light passes through the stream as I pour it into the cup. I cut it by half with hot milk, though. The combination is the kind of cafe au lait you'd get at the Cafe du Monde and (even more so, because Merchants makes their coffee) the Morning Call. You can get Union in almost any grocery store other than Winn-Dixie, which for some reason has not handled it in a long time. Subscribe To The Five-Star Edition Every weekday, I write even more articles, reviews, and recipes for the New Orleans Menu Daily.
