Nobody ever gave a moribund old
restaurant a better rebirth than did Arnaud’s owner Archie Casbarian.
Atmospherically, it’s an exemplar of the old-style New Orleans Creole
dining institution: tiled floors, tin ceilings, beveled-glass windows,
and ancient overhead fans. The menu blends dishes created eons ago by
Count Arnaud with spiffy new food--all with an unmistakable Creole
taste. The wine list’s pricing is a bit dear, but the selection is
excellent. There's also an exceptional collection of ports, Cognacs,
and cigars. Arnaud's was the first of the grand old Creole dining palaces in the French Quarter to reopen after the hurricane. With its full menu, yet. After a few months, the terrific jazz brunch--which I consider the best in town right now--returned, too. In the evening, Arnaud’s is two restaurants in one. Its main dining room carries on conventionally, while the room facing Bourbon Street regales diners with a restrained jazz quartet (at a small cover). It's an enormous restaurant, with thirteen private rooms in sizes ranging from a single table for eight to a grand ballroom.
