All-Oyster Dinners Every Thursday, Begue's

This is usually the best time of year for oysters, and the ones I've had lately seem to indicate that this year is no exception. (They are a bit more expensive, however; the Louisiana beds are not back up to full production since the storm.)

Begue's--the flagship restaurant of the Royal Sonesta Hotel, which also runs the Desire Oyster Bar--is running an all-oyster special menu every Thursday for the month of February. It costs $45 (plus tax and tip), and it looks good to me:

Oyster-Tamarind Ceviche
With Chile-Infused Popcorn

Poached Louisiana Oyster Stew
Savory Blood Orange Sabayon, Bowfin (Louisiana) Caviar

Baked Oysters
Smoked Bacon, Shallot Confit, Béarnaise Sauce, Herbed Bread Crumbs, Aromatic Rock Salt

Sorbet du Jour

Pan Roasted Beef Tenderloin With Panko Crusted Oysters
Sweet Potato-Parsnip Soufflé, Aged Parmesan-Smoked Cheddar Foam

Flash Fried Cornmeal Dusted Oyster
Dandelion and Spinach Salad, Crystal Hot Sauce Sun-Dried Tomato Dressing

Ginger Bavarian With Almond Lace Cookie

This sounds really good to me and like a tremendous bargain. I wish I'd known about it yesterday, when it started! And that I weren't out of town next Thursday! (Maybe we can persuade them to keep this going deeper into Lent.)

Begue's. In the Royal Sonesta Hotel, 300 Bourbon. Reservations 553-2278.
