Cafe Maspero
Post-Storm Ratings: C, 1$
French Quarter: 601 Decatur
523-6250
Lunch and dinner seven days.
Cash Only.

Indistinguishable from dozens of tourist-convenience eateries in the Quarter, Maspero's offers one tipoff to its excellence: there's usually a line in front. The explanation: here are some of the best sandwiches in town--and they're not even poor boys! Pastrami, corned beef, ham, and fried seafood come amply forth. Almost everything they serve between the two halves of that French-bread-style round roll they use for sandwiches here is first-class--with one exception. The hamburgers here are only ordinary. So go with something else for a change.

Maspero's menu goes on to include many standard local platters: red beans and rice, jambalaya, fried and grilled seafood. All of this is as good as you'll find anywhere in this category. But the prices are like those in some hidden little joint in the boonies, not one on a strategic French Quarter corner. It's always been one of the outstanding dining values in the city.

MENU RECOMMENDATIONS:
Red beans and rice.
Ham sandwich.
Corned beef sandwich.
Pastrami sandwich.
Grilled seafood sandwich.
Fried oyster sandwich.
Seafood platter.
