Restaurant des Familles Escapes Flooding, Reopened Friday
The Restaurant On The Bayou Returns

The big problem caused by the two recent hurricanes was high water all along the coast, and as far inland as the waterways go. In Katrina and Rita, Restaurant Des Familles--in Crown Point, right on Bayou Barataria, a straight shot to the Gulf--was flooded twice.

Somehow, they escaped flooding this time. Owner Pat Morrow says she will be back open tonight (Friday, September 19) at five o'clock. That's about as soon as anything opened down there. Lafitte, just down the road, was covered with water, and the evacuation orders lasted well over a week after the latter storm.

Des Familles is a mildly upscale seafood place, with everything from fried platters to more ambitious, saucier dishes. Its view of the bayou is distinctive.

Restaurant des Familles. Lafitte: 7163 Barataria Blvd. at Lafitte-Larose Hwy. (LA 45 at LA 3134). 504-689-7834. Seafood.
