By Tom Fitzmorris Originally published December , 2007 Founder Of Visko's Restaurant In Gretna Frances Cavaretta Vuskovich, 96 The lady who, with her sons and daughter, opened one of the best-remembered, busiest, and most delicious seafood restaurants in the annals of New Orleans dining died this past Saturday. Frances Vuskovich was a West Bank native and lived her entire life there. Her husband Matthew, like many Croatian Orleanians, was a commercial fisherman of the first water. He made so many friends in the fish and oyster business in Plaquemines Parish that it was a natural progression for his family to open a seafood restaurant. Visko's started small in the late 1960s, on Gretna Boulevard just off Belle Chasse Highway. It grew into an enormous restaurant operation, spearheaded by Frances's sons Vincent and Joe and her daughter Fay. It was packed all the time and served great food. They opened a second location in Palm Springs, of all places--and perhaps that was a symptom of what would quickly bring the restaurant down. Or it could have been the early death of Vincent Vuskovich. The story is best explained in an article about Joe Vuskovich's current restaurant, a place called Yat's in Indianapolis. Click here for the article. But in its glory days, there was hardly a better place to eat seafood than Visko's. Frances Vuskovich was one of its creators. © 2007 Tom Fitzmorris.
