Nothing about the outward signs seems promising. Adjacent to a doughnut shop, the building looks like it used to be a fast-food restaurant. The name seems more appropriate for a window in a mall food court. In fact, Mr. Gyros has a good culinary track record. Some of this may be due to the rarity of Greek cooking in New Orleans (there's only one other admitted Greek place). We're starving for the stuff. It's the same menu we get in Greek restaurants the world over. Start with taramosalata (the creamy, white carp roe dip), or the spinach pie, or a Greek salad. Because a lot of people confuse Greek and Lebanese food (they both come from the same roots, so that's logical enough), they have hummus among the starts, too. If you order two appetizers, you're full now. The portions are large, and the food is filling--especially if you're munching pita bread as you go. The namesake dish of the restaurant is the ground, formed, seasoned lamb-and-beef roast on a vertical rotisserie. There exist definite gradations of quality in gyros; this is a good one, without the gelatinous texture that one sometimes finds. It has crusty edges and a great flavor. It comes out with tzatziki (the dill-scented yogurt and cucumber sauce that stands in for mayonnaise in Greek sandwiches), and it makes a good and filling meal. The moussaka is a specialty, with a light texture that's counteracted by the enormity of the cube they give you. They make serviceable souvlaki (shish kebab) of lamb, beef, chicken, and shrimp. And an excellent herbal roast chicken. Lamb chops and sliced lamb leg, herbal and garlicky. The large, square dining room with big windows is kept from being stark by plants and railings. Not a fancy place, but comfortable enough. Prices are low and the service good. This was a restaurant in the 2007 Top Sixty Ethnic Restaurant Countdown. To view the entire list, click here.
