Kid Creole
Sandwiches. Breakfast. Lunch.
Metairie: 1919 Airline Dr. 504-836-3760. Map.
Very Casual.

A gas station built in the 1960s on then-busy Airline Highway didn't need its grease racks or office anymore, and replaced them with a convenience store and a kitchen big enough to do some real cooking. The place barely qualifies as a restaurant, with a few picnic tables in one corner of the store.
The poor boy selection is more extensive than most, all well-made with decent ingredients cooked in house. These are sandwiches for hard-working people, with extreme length and girth--too big for the average person to finish, at prices that would be a bargain if they bought standard-size poor boys. In addition to the sandwiches, Kid Creole turns out basic breakfasts and an array of daily plate specials, following the progression of red beans on Monday to seafood on Friday.
