After the lengthy, problematic rebuilding process we've come to expect in deep-flood zones, the century-old Angelo Brocato's ice cream parlor will reopen officially this Saturday, September 23. Not only that, but they're having a big party to celebrate their return, and the whole city is invited. The whole city will probably be there, too, judging by the number of people who have implored us for news about Brocato's dusring the last year. From noon will 10 p.m., there'll not only be lots of spumoni, cannoli, torroncino, biscotti, and espresso, but music. Benny Grunch and the Bunch, followed by Bobby Lonero and his band. Brocato's is a classic Sicilian-style gelateria. (Having been in Sicily just a couple of months ago, I can tell you that the place could move there tomorrow and be regarded as one of the best, as it is here.) Brocato's North Carrollton Avenue shop was also where they made the ice cream for retail distribution around town. The flood water there came from two directions, was very deep, and stood for two weeks. That made for a tough reconstruction process. But it's done, and Arthur Brocato (third generation) and his family continues into the wonderful parlor's second century. Could there be better news? © 2006 Tom Fitzmorris.
