Cochon bills itself as a country-style restaurant with Cajun and Southern food, neither of which is especially well represented in our Creole-dominated town. Prices are modest and the style rustic, but with more of an edge of sophistication than, say, a barbecue joint. (The restaurant's logo suggests that it just might be a BBQ place.) Here's the menu they opened with a few days ago: Small Plates Spoon Bread With Okra And Tomatoes $7 Louisiana Crawfish Pie $8 Eggplant & Shrimp Dressing $7 Marinated Mushrooms With Fried Eggplant $7 Wood Fired Oyster Roast $11 Smoked Duck Breast With Marinated Green Beans $9 Crab And Shrimp Pistolette $8 Boucherie “Link” Sausage With Stone Ground Grits And Peppers $8 Cochon Rillette With Mustard And Pickles $7 Fried Boudin With Pickled Peppers $7 Smoked Ham Hocks With Braised Cabbage $8 Spicy Grilled Pork Ribs With Watermelon Pickle $11 Soup And Salad Chef Donald’s Black Eyed Pea And Pork Gumbo $6 Soup Of The Day $6 Iceberg Lettuce With Buttermilk Dressing And Radishes $6 Cucumbers And Herbs In Vinegar $5 Shredded Pork Salad With Jalapeno-Orange Vinaigrette $8 Fried Chicken Livers With Pepper Jelly Toast $7 Entrees & Wood-Burning Oven Rabbit And Dumplings $16 Louisiana Cochon Du Lait With Turnips And Cracklins $18 Smoked Beef Brisket With Horseradish And Coleslaw $17 Oven Roasted Gulf Fish “Fisherman’S Style” $18 Oyster And Bacon Sandwich $12 Catfish Sauce Piquant $17 Cochon is open for lunch Mondays through Fridays, and for dinner Mondays through Saturdays. 930 Tchoupitoulas, 588-2123. © 2006 Tom Fitzmorris.
