Gourmet's Top Fifty Restaurants: August is Number 22

Gourmet magazine just published its annual restaurant issue, and lists (for the first time, if my memory serves me) its picks for the top fifty places to dine in America. Number one is Alinea in Chicago. Two is Chez Panisse in Berkeley. The French Laundry is Number Three, along with its New York counterpart Per Se (why count these as one restaurant?)

Two restaurants in New Orleans made the list. Restaurant August, Chef John Besh's great place on Tchoupitoulas Street, is Number Twenty-Two. We'd agree it's the best in town. Number Forty-Nine is a surprising pick: Herbsaint, indeed an excellent restaurant, but not one we'd call the second best in New Orleans. But that's how these things go.

We haven't received our print copy of the magazine yet, and they didn't say how they made the choices in the online article.
