The Hellenic Cultural Center, home base for the oldest Greek Orthodox community in America, took a hit from the hurricane. On the bank of Bayou St. John, it caught a few feet of water flowing from two different breaks. But never underestimate the enthusiasm and energy of people of Greek descent, especially when it comes to things Greek. The annual Greek Festival will go on as usual, on the same location as always (Robert E. Lee Boulevard at St. Bernard Avenue). Even on the same schedule, with the same features that pcaks the grounds every year. It opens at five this Friday afternoon and goes till eleven. Then again all day and evening Saturday and all day Sunday. Most of those reading this go for the food. It will all be there: the dinner plate, the roast lamb, the dozens of home-baked Greek pastries. The ouzo frozen daiquiris. And the dancing, the games, the raffle (for a trip to Greece), the run, and all the rest of it, in the restored cathedral and cultural center. It's great fun and a good family event. Tickets are five dollars (that enters you in the raffle), and kids get in for nothing. Opaa! © 2006 Tom Fitzmorris. All rights reserved. news@nomenu.com |
