Gulfstream Replaces Houston's On St. Charles Avenue

The chain restaurant whose future engendered the greatest interest among our readers is without doubt Houston's on St. Charles Avenue, a fantastically busy place. Nobody could figure out why it was allowed to just sit there, even though the word was that it was looted. (There was not serious flooding, however.)

We have known for some time now that the company that owns Houston's was going the open another of their concepts in that spot. Quietly on Thursday night, it did. The name is Gulfstream, and it's a seafood restaurant along the lines of Houston's in terms of casualness, price, and turn-and-burn busyness in its other locations. (Yes, it does seem odd that the first restaurant in a chain with that name would not be here.) If you want something to compare it with, it would be GW Fins, but not quite that upscale. (If you've ever been to McCormick and Schmick's in another city, then you've seen something like what Gulfstream will be.)

They're open at four in the afternoon for dinner only right now, with no word when (or whether) lunch will follow. The Houston's in Metairie will remain a Houston's. The mystery of Houston's popularity continues unabated. 1755 St. Charles Ave., 524-1578.
