By Tom Fitzmorris Originally published July 6, 2007 Harry's Doing Better, Still Ailing I received this note from the son of Harry Tervalon, who for more than four decades was one of the city's most celebrated waiters at the Camellia Grill. And one of the most lovable guys the restaurant business ever produced. Last Wednesday evening, we rushed
my Dad to the emergency room at Touro Hospital. He has had a problem
with prostate cancer for some years but kept it in check.
For all the smiles and pleasure and friendship Harry
gave thousands of New Orleanians over the years, that's the least we
can do. We're pulling for you, Harry! What at first was thought to be a lack of eating has turned into a major medical event. He has a tumor that must be removed or he will die. The cancer has also spread. The operation for the tumor will take place on Thursday morning. The doctors and staff at Touro are doing all they can to make him comfortable. At the present time, he is not in pain and that is comforting. This is very difficult for me. He is the most wonderful person I have known. His love of life and people is second to none. Because it came up out of the blue, this makes it hard to handle. All I can ask of you is to keep my father in your prayers. Thanks, Harry, Jr. Update: I received this from Harry, Jr. this morning: The operation was a success. The tumor
was removed. We still have a road to travel. This was life threatening
and had to be done quickly.
He is recovering and in good spirits. I brought a copy of your comments from the web site to him and read it. The old Harry smile came to his face. That was worth a lot to me. To us, too. © 2007 Tom Fitzmorris. All rights reserved. news@nomenu.com |
