Chef Adolfo Garcia Opens Argentinian Steakhouse

Before I tell you another word about the new Warehouse District restaurant La Boca, I'd better say that this is not one of those all-you-can-eat, sliced-off-the-sword palaces of carnivory like Fogo de Chao. (A lot of people would love for one of those to open in New Orleans, but don't hold your breath waiting for it if you're one of them.)

La Boca is, says Chef Adolfo Garcia, "the flip side of RioMar." Garcia and his partner Nicolas Bazan created the terrific RioMar as a Spanish and Latin American seafood place some five years ago.) Bazan's native country is Argentina, where steak is so commonly eaten in restaurants that servers there often assume that's what you're eating, unless you tell them otherwise. So it's largely a steakhouse, with big slabs of red meat. There's a significant Italian influence on the food of Argentina, and Garcia and Bazan say you'll find touches of that, too--as in the "milanesas," another name for panneed meat.

La Boca opened June 1 at 857 Fulton Street, a block away from RioMar and across the street from Wolfe's In The Warehouse District. Like RioMar, it's in a converted warehouse building. The chef de cuisine is Jarel Ralls, whose most recent tour of note was at Vegea Tapas Cafe. The maitre 'd is Orestes Rodriguez, who most recently was on the front door at Andrea's, but is best known as front man at the currently-closed La Riviera.

At the moment, they're open from 6 till 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and till midnight Thursdays through Saturdays. Here's the opening menu:
