Pascal's Manale Reopens

The creator of barbecue shrimp opened quietly for dinner last Friday, March 3, beginning a temporary five-evening schedule (closed Sundays and Tuesdays, but open and very welcome on Mondays). It's a highly significant reopening, not only because of Manale's long history in the Uptown community (they're 93 years old this year), but also because it was in rather deep flood water for over a week. Restaurants in such a situation are only now beginning to reopen, so challenging were the problems of redemption. In Manale's case, the entire building was enclosed in a red-and-yellow canvas bag, then filled with a powerful gaseous form of bleach that killed all the mold. But that was only after the one thousand or so photographs of past customers were removed and stored (although they lost more than a few of those to the water).

I drove by yesterday, and I think we will be pleased by the renovation. It was long overdue anyway. Another good side to the hurricane, which in the long run will make this a much more substantial and pleasant place to live and dine. 1838 Napoleon Ave., 895-4877.
