But the name rings such a sweet bell in the forgetful minds of many of its former customers that its return a couple of years ago was greeted with glee. The new Parkway--in the same building as the old one was, just off Bayou St. John near the brake tag station--had new owners and, apparently, new recipes, because the latter-day versions of their sandwiches are a good deal better than what I remember of the old place. Like everything else in Mid-City, they've been closed for awhile, but their building's elevation above the average local terrain was enough to prevent devastating damage. And so they're back again, one of very few restaurants in that part of town that's been able to open so far. The grand return was heralded last weekend with a big party featuring Bennie "Ain't Dere No Mo" Grunch and the Bunch. The Parkway also has the distinction of being the 400th restaurant to be added to the Restaurants Open list on this website. My guess is that we'll pass the 500 mark around January 15. © 2005 Tom Fitzmorris. All rights reserved. news@nomenu.com |
