Still Not A Big Celebration In New Orleans
Oktoberfest Eats, Here And There

Oktoberfest hasn't been the same since Chef Willy Coln retired and Kolb's closed for good. The Deutsches Haus, as it has for a hundred years, oom-pah-pahs on in its old courtyard on Galvez Street ever Friday and Saturday until the end of the month. Their home-cooked German food is inexpensive but just okay. They do have a very impressive array of beer and schnapps. And the German bands, too.

The only real restaurant I've found with an Oktoberfest menu is the Peppermill, the Riccobono family's long-running bistro in Metairie. They're unambiguously Italian, but for some reason they've always had a German dish or two pop up on their menu.  They have more than that right now:
  • Sauerbraten $13.95
  • Wiener Schnitzel $12.95
  • Jaeger Schnitzel (with mushrooms) $13.95
  • Holsteiner Schnitzel (with a fried egg on top) $13.95
  • Corned Beef and Cabbage $12.95
  • Bratwurst with Sauerkraut and Potatoe $11.95
  • German Chocolate Cake $4.00
Most of these come with potatoes and sauerkraut on the side. They're also featuring Warsteiner beer in both dark and light isotopes for $4, and Piesporter Michelsberg--a light, sweet Riesling wine from Germany--for $5.50 a glass.
