We Lose One

Restaurants sometimes close. Less often here than anywhere And, surprisingly, less often since the mass extinction that took place last August. Indeed, I know of only two restaurants that opened following the storm, then closed again. The first was Andrew Jaeger's Seafood in t
he French Quarter, which was only open a few weeks in October before shuttering.

The second occurred just last week, when the Steak Knife's downtown location closed after struggling both before and after the storm. What downtown location? Yeah, that was part of the problem. Not enough people knew that Bobby and Guy Roth had a place in the Whitney Bank Building on Poydras at Camp, where 56 Degrees did no better.

The problem, according to Bobby, was that the hotel that occupies most of the building now wanted the Steak Knife to be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner almost every day. That would be a stretch in good times, but with the restaurant staff problem being what it is these days, it became impossible.

The Roths say that they will reopen in Lakeview at their location on Harrison Avenue and Marshal Foch. They've been at the corner serving consistently good food since the early 1970s. Of course, rebuilding in that very deep water zone will be challenging. But we're all glad that they will recover.
