Steak Knife Will Reopen In Lakeview
--But Not Where It Used To Be

The Steak Knife--a long-running, consistently pleasant eatery in Lakeview--is planning to return to duty in the next few months. But they won't be in their familiar location on Harrison Avenue and Marshal Foch. The flooding there was so severe that Bobby Roth (who owns the place with his brother and sister; I ran into him at Trey Yuen last week) says they will not be able to return there for a long time.

They do, however, have a lease on the former location of the Windjammer (and VooDoo BBQ and Rock 'n' Sake, among other restaurants that have been on Pontchartrain Blvd. at the Marina). That's where they'll reopen the Steak Knife for now. The Roths ran the Windjammer as a separate restaurant for a few years in the 1990s.

They also had a restaurant in the Whitney Bank Building on the cornre of Camp and Poydras for about a year. But after the hurricane, they found it impossible to keep it going for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and room service seven days a week, so they closed it.

All this brought to mind a unique appetizer the Steak Knife used to offer: tidbit on the oven.
