Vizard's on the Avenue opened softly Wednesday night in the space formerly occupied by Lulu's In The Garden District (and a long time ago, Savoir Faire, Susan Spicer's first restaurant), in the hotel on the corner of St. Charles and Jackson Avenues. Vizard opened the kitchen at Cafe Adelaide a couple of years ago, but left a bit before the hurricane, as those of us who have followed his hopscotch career around town expected he would. Vizard has been one of the most accomplished contemporary Creole chefs for twenty years, and likely holds the record for the number of restaurants in which he's worked at the top levels. "It's my food, as usual," he says. And that's pretty good. Vizard's on the Avenue is open for dinner only Tuesdays through Saturdays right now, but he says he may open for lunch after Mardi Gras. "Or maybe open seven nights a week for dinner," he says. "Sundays and Mondays have become like weekends lately!" 2203 St. Charles Avenue, 529-9912. © 2006 Tom Fitzmorris.
