White Boot Brigade

White rubber boots--also known as shrimp boots--are the official uniform of the guys who pull shrimp out of local waters. A group of them are touring the country, telling people what most of us have known for a long time: that wild-caught Louisiana shrimp are, quite simply, the best shrimp what am.

This isn't just rooting for the home team. Louisiana shrimp really are the standard of the world. Incomparably better than imported shrimp from ecologically-unfriendly shrimp farms on the other side of the world.

This Saturday, June 8, the White Boot Brigade is making one of its local stops. It's at Holy Angels Church on St. Claude at Gallier Street in the Ninth Ward, from one till five in the afternoon.

They'll be selling shrimp, of course. And cooking it. A chef or two will show up to give a demo. And you can eat. It may have been a long time since you had real Louisiana shrimp, there are so many inferior shrimp out there--especially in the supermarkets.

The White Shrimp Brigade is a project of Market Umbrella, which also organized the Crescent City Farmers Markets. You can learn more about the White Boot Brigade and where they're going to be next at their web site.
