Li'l Dizzy's is Wayne Baquet's continuation of a long tradition of great Creole cooking begun by his father, whose Eddie's on Law Street was one of the most famous soul food restaurants in America. After a few years Uptown at Zachary's, Wayne opened a wildly popular cafe on Esplanade Avenue in the Treme section. Names for jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, it brought diners in from all over the city for breakfasts and lunches. Wayne kept up the standards with his Creole gumbo, fried chicken trout Baquet, and bread pudding, and added many more dishes to the mix to make it a great taste of the New Orleans neighborhood cuisine. In 2007, Wayne took over the cafe in The Whitney, a grand space in marble and brass that once served as half the lobby of the Whitney Bank's Poydras Branch. The cafe has become a popular lunch spot for people working in the Central Business District, as well as an affordable alternative for Sunday brunch.
