500BestSquareBeignets & Cafe Au Lait @ Morning Call Coffee Stand

DishStars_3
Although the decades of wear and tear at the Metairie Morning Call is offputting, they continue to have better beignets and cafe au lait than its younger but more famous and much more successful competitor, the Cafe du Monde. The beignets--pillow-light doughnuts made of yeast dough--are almost always fried to order, and are denser and crisper at the outside. I always how I ate the full order of three beignets for so many years, but I stop when I realize I've eaten two of them already. Lately, the profile of the Morning Call has been enhanced tremendously by the opening of its new branch in the Casino at City Park. Beautiful!

I took 2 grandchildren to City Park during the holidays and we ended with a visit to Morning Call. We were served cold flat beignets; I just took it to mean another great New Orleans food had bit the dust to live only in memory. If you say that's not the norm, I'll try it again!

It's not the norm. You should have sent them back. Tastefully yours, Tom Fitzmorris
