A pleasant roadhouse well out into the countryside between Slidell and Mandeville, Assunta's features simple but good Italian standards and a few offbeat dishes. The regulars wax eloquent about the smooth, sweet red sauce--one even children will love. It's Parmigiana city, basically. The veal and beef is better than the seafood. The bar (where you may well wait for a table) is an antique wooden altar reclaimed from a country church. The many smallish dining rooms surround the bar on three sides.
